Scaling Foundational Literacy and Numeracy through AI-Powered, WhatsApp-Based Learning

Challenge

Foundational literacy remains a persistent issue for millions of children globally. In Pakistan alone, 77% of 10-year-olds cannot read and understand a simple sentence. Traditional interventions struggle with scale, cost, and sustainability.

Most digital solutions fail because they require ingredients that do not exist in low-resourced contexts: modern devices, reliable internet, and adults with digital literacy to supervise.

Beaj Solution: WhatsApp-Based Literacy Coach

Beaj Education has developed a foundational literacy tool that can take a child from zero to Grade 3 reading proficiency in months instead of years. The program is delivered entirely via WhatsApp, uses voice-based AI assessment, and is designed to be:

Accessible & Easy to Use

Works on low-end Android devices and minimal data plans; no need for new apps, tablets, broadband internet, or digital literacy.

Highly Cost-Effective

The marginal delivery cost is about $1 per child per month.

Scalable & Adaptable

There are over 3 billion WhatsApp users globally, the vast majority of whom reside in emerging countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Each learner gets access to:

RCT Evaluation

We’re evaluating the Beaj Foundational Learning Program 2026 through a randomized controlled trial led by US-based researchers. The program is being delivered via an AI-powered WhatsApp bot to 2400 students (Grades 1-4) from a variety of school types. Half the sample got the program in the summer of 2026, while the other half (control group) will get it post endline testing.

Treatment includes up to 60 days of lessons and activities, approx. 30 minutes per day. The core focus is on English reading and comprehension, but to make the program holistic, we added foundational math, social emotional learning, and fun facts about the world around us.

Our sample is drawn from government schools, public-private partner schools, NGO-run schools, and low-cost private schools.

We partnered with the original creators of the international EGRA toolkit at Tangerine Central to use  a pre-validated EGRA Test which we tested and tweaked further, on the Tangerine platform. Baseline and Endline testing is school-based.
