Building Essential Skills for Success that schools don’t teach
We use low cost EdTech to upskill underserved Pakistanis and unlock higher earning potential
Our Why
Learning outcomes in Pakistan are dismal: Over 75% of 10-year-old Pakistanis can’t read a sentence and 50 million students will leave K-12 education without essential skills required to succeed in the 21st century. These include language proficiency, communication, critical thinking and digital skills. ~2 million inadequately qualified graduates become teachers, with little or no access to professional development, reinforcing the vicious cycle of poor learning outcomes, a poorly skilled workforce, and poorly trained future teachers.
The English language is a major pain point: curriculum policy requires teachers not only to teach English as a subject, but also to teach Math and Science in it. In the labour market, access to higher-paying and white-collar jobs as well as global freelance and tech markets is heavily predicated on English proficiency. But only 6% of teachers are English-proficient, and they predominantly teach the wealthy.
At Beaj Education, we are on a mission to democratize skills that have historically only been available to a privileged few. We do this by using low-cost technology to provide affordable access to high-quality skill-development courses, designed by world-class instructors and customized for Pakistani teachers, students, and young professionals. Our goal is to reach a million users by 2030.
Our Dream
By democratizing skills that have historically only been available to the privileged, we envision a world where anyone, regardless of household income and educational background, can easily access high quality skill development and tap opportunities for upward socioeconomic mobility.
Our Work
We provide easy, affordable access to high quality, research-based skill development courses created by world-class experts specifically for the Pakistani market, starting with English language proficiency and ‘soft’ skills.
We deliver these courses via a mobile app designed for low-income users with low digital literacy, old android phones and patchy internet connections. Our app uses speech recognition technology to give real time feedback and helps users build confidence in a safe space. We are now integrating an AI powered bilingual voice chatbot to act as a conversation buddy and personalized coach.
Complementing the app, we run a Whatsapp community of +1000 teachers to nurture emotional and mental health, build confidence and agency, and share ideas, problems and innovative solutions.
