RCT Results

A 3-arm randomized evaluation with 2,942 teachers evaluated three groups: Course only (T1), Course + AI Chatbot (T2), and a Control Group.

Teachers in treatment scored 0.13 SD higher on spoken English, with the strongest gains in grammar and vocabulary.

Teachers’ sense of agency rose significantly by 0.12 SD. 12 weeks was enough to raise teachers’ aspirations and their sense of what an autonomous professional looks like — but not intensive enough to build the confidence and habits to match. It tells us where the next version of the programme needs to go deeper.

82% of assigned teachers started and 60% completed the 12-week course—despite the real, non-monetary effort required. Behaviorally designed nudges, peer communities, and gamification consistently drove completion.

AI offers delivery advantages, but technology alone doesn’t automatically boost learning outcomes.

Beaj Teacher Training Program — Madagascar

In partnership with Madagascar’s Ministry of National Education (MEN) and the Digital Governance Unit, and funded by the World Bank, Beaj piloted a WhatsApp-based digital training across 27 public primary schools proving that low-bandwidth delivery is the key to unlocking massive impact in emerging markets.

A dual-track curriculum targeting both language training and institutional leadership:

  • Appetite for digital upskilling in Madagascar is massive. 88% of enrolled teachers actively engaged in the French course proving that motivation is high when content is accessible.
  • Access — not interest — determines completion. When hardware bottlenecks or device locks threatened momentum, the program adapted instantly allowing educators to transition seamlessly between school tablets and personal smartphones without losing their learning history.
